Custom Challenge Coins

Custom challenge coins are struck metal medallions made to your artwork for military and first-responder units, corporate recognition, and university or commemorative gifts. Metal Memories Co. has produced them in its own factory since 1984, controlling every step from die creation to final inspection.

Materials & Options

Challenge coins are struck from three metals, each producing a different weight and feel in the hand.

  • Copper – the classic coin base: dense and smooth, it holds deep relief and accepts every coloring process we run
  • Aluminum alloy – lightweight and cost-efficient for large event runs and handout programs
  • Pure silver – reserved for premium commemorative and presentation coins

Edges and surface details distinguish a custom coin from a generic one. Available edge treatments include oblique line, flat wave, rope line, petal, curve wave, imprint text ribbed, and lathed edges. Detail options add laser engraved letters and background texture, so each coin can carry names, dates, or mottos beyond the main face design. Edge styles can be combined with any metal and any coloring process—tell us which combination you want and the quotation will itemize it.

Manufacturing Processes

Each coin is produced in our own factory using one of four coloring routes; the die-striking stage is the same for all of them.

Cloisonné. Mineral ore enamel is fired into the recessed design and polished level with the metal lines, giving cloisonné coins a smooth, hard, durable color surface.

Stamped imitation hard enamel. The struck coin is filled and polished so color sits flush with the metal lines, closely matching the cloisonné look at a more accessible price.

Soft enamel. Color is applied into the recesses and left below the raised metal lines, so the design keeps a dimensional, tactile relief you can feel under a thumb.

Without coloring. The coin is struck and left as all-metal relief: the design reads entirely through raised and recessed metal, a classic look for military and commemorative issues.

Popular Styles

Challenge coin orders at our factory typically serve three audiences:

  • Military and first-responder units – unit coins for fire, police, and military teams, often finished without coloring for an all-metal relief look, with rope or imprint text ribbed edges and mottos around the rim
  • Corporate recognition – coins for employee milestones and service awards, usually in cloisonné or imitation hard enamel with laser engraved letters for individual names
  • University and commemorative gifts – anniversary and graduation coins in pure silver or copper, using background texture and specialty edges to set each issue apart

Combine any metal, coloring route, and edge treatment—your design proof shows the exact combination before sampling.

FAQ

What is the minimum order quantity for custom challenge coins?

Coin MOQs vary with metal and finishing route—pure silver, copper, and aluminum alloy runs are quoted differently. Your confirmed [MOQ] appears in the quotation sent with your free design.

How long does a challenge coin order take?

Typical lead time is [LEAD TIME] from sample approval. Dies are cut in-house and all striking and coloring happen on our production floor, so quoted dates reflect our actual machine schedule.

Can you engrave names, ranks, or numbers on each coin?

Yes. Laser engraved letters are a standard detail option, and an imprint text ribbed edge carries repeating text around the rim. Both are laid out in your design proof before sampling.

What is the difference between cloisonné and imitation hard enamel?

Both set color level with the metal lines. Cloisonné uses fired mineral ore enamel for a hard, durable surface; stamped imitation hard enamel reaches a similar look through filling and polishing, usually at a lower cost.
